Nara Park is a famous public park located in the city of Nara, Japan. Established in 1880, the park is one of the oldest in Japan and is home to some of the country's most iconic cultural and natural sites. The park is particularly well-known for its free-roaming deer, considered sacred messengers of the Shinto gods. Visitors can buy "shika senbei" (deer crackers) to feed them, and the deer have learned to bow to people in exchange for food, making the experience especially charming.
Tōdai-ji, located in Nara, Japan, is one of the most famous and historically significant temples in the country. Founded in the 8th century by Emperor Shōmu, it was originally constructed as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan and has played a central role in the spread of Buddhism. Tōdai-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Japan's Buddhist culture. Its immense scale and historical significance make it a must-see destination in Nara.
Kasuga Taisha is Nara's most celebrated shrine. It was established at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city. Kasuga Taisha was also the tutelary shrine of the Fujiwara, Japan's most powerful family clan during most of the Nara and Heian Periods. Beyond the shrine's offering hall, which can be visited free of charge, there is a paid inner area which provides a closer view of the shrine's inner buildings.
