Itinerary

The Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel

The Metropolitan Area Outer Discharge Channel is an underground tunnel-type drainage facility designed to prevent flood damage to rivers flowing through the Japanese capital of Tokyo and surrounding areas. Since the facility was built, rainwater and flooded river water from neighboring rivers, which used to be flooded every time there was a heavy rain, flows smoothly into a pressure regulating tank, and the stored water is discharged to another river. When the amount of water released has been at its highest, the facility has released a whopping 15 cups of Tokyo Dome (or approximately 5100 cups of an Olympic-size swimming pool). In addition, the underground temperature is maintained at a low 13 to 14 degrees Celsius all year round, making it feel cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It is a place where visitors can once again appreciate the high level of Japanese meticulous technology, mechanical beauty, and disaster prevention awareness.
