The Udawalawe Dam is a large irrigation dam in Udawalawe, in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The dam consists of an embankment section and a gravity section, combining the total dam length to approximately 3.9 km (2.4 mi). The dam is also used for hydroelectric power generation, powering three 2 MW units, commissioned in April 1969. And on your way you may get to see many interesting places just pass by
In Sri Lanka, it is a wilderness area and an essential habitat for waterfowl and elephants. It was designated a national park in 1972 to preserve catchment regions and establish a refuge. It is situated on the border of the provinces of Uwa and Sabaragamuwa. Numerous elephants, sloth bears, and other wildlife may be seen in Udawalawe, as well as other bird species. Elephants that are wounded or orphaned are temporarily cared for at the Udawalawe Transit Home in Sri Lanka before being released back into the wild. The Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation manages it and provides a protected setting where elephants may get specialized care, medical attention, and interaction with other elephants. Visitors may see the elephants from a safe distance while learning more about their conservation efforts and habits. The transit home's ultimate purpose is to release the elephants back into the wild, where they may live naturally and improve the ecology as a whole.
