Robben Island is a prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his 27 years in prison in a tiny cell during the apartheid era. Today, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in South African history. Tours to the island begin with multimedia exhibits in the museum at the Nelson Mandela Gateway Victoria and Alfred Waterfront before travelers hop aboard to the island. The boat trip takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on weather conditions. The tour guide/driver will not be joining you on the boat trip to the island as there will be a tour guide; former political prisoner on the island who will give you a guided tour. Your tour guide/driver will be waiting to welcome you back at the port.
