Medjugorje was first mentioned in 1599, in historical documents, as an autonomous parish. The current parish was founded in 1892 and is dedicated to St. James, the patron saint of pilgrims. The current parish church was completed in 1969 and is dedicated to St. James Zebedee. The first church was built in 1897, but after World War I, due to instability, it became unusable. Međugorje is a populated place in the municipality of Čitluk, in southern Herzegovina.[1] It is a highly visited Catholic Marian shrine.
