Morioka Sansa Odori Festival is a joyful celebration rooted in legend. Long ago, a demon named Rasetsu tormented the people. They prayed to Mitsuishi-kami, who captured the demon and made him leave a handprint on a rock to promise never to return.
In gratitude, the villagers danced around the sacred rocks, chanting “Sansa, Sansa.” That celebration grew into today’s Sansa Odori: a vibrant parade of drums, flutes, and thousands of dancers in colorful attire. The festival honors peace, community, and local pride.
