Itinerary

The Asterousia Mountains are the southernmost mountain range in Europe, characterized by rugged terrain and significant ecological and archaeological value. According to myth, they are named after the ancient Cretan king Asterion, who married Europe following Zeus’s command. Kofinas is the highest peak, standing at 1,231 meters. At its summit, offering unique views of the Southern Cretan Sea, stands the church of the Holy Cross. Archaeological findings indicate that Kofinas was the site of the most significant Minoan peak sanctuary in south Crete, flourishing around 1700-1600 BC, with worship continuing into the Roman era. Artifacts such as clay figurines, idols, metal plaques, seals, and other votive offerings have been discovered in the area.

Kapetaniana

Kapetaniana is a mountainous village amphitheatrically built on the slopes of the Asterousia Mountains. It is sparsely populated, and in recent years, efforts have been made to develop tourism in the area without losing its distinctive character. Visitors can feel the aura of old Crete as they walk through the stone-paved alleys lined with traditional houses. We will also make a short stop at the Monastery of the Three Hierarchs, which was founded in the 14th century by the monk Joseph Filagris and it is dedicated to the Three Hierarchs. Filagris is considered one of the most important scholars of Aristotle during a time when ancient philosophical texts were not a preferred subject of study. His manuscripts are now preserved in several libraries around Europe and Mount Athos. Filagris’s students copied various manuscripts, including parchments and codices with religious, scientific, and philosophical content from ancient authors, with a particular emphasis on Aristotle’s works

Agios Ioannis Beach

Agios Ioannis is a small seaside settlement located beneath the Asterousia Mountains. The settlement is named after the old monastery of Saint John, where both the church and the monks’ cells are situated within caves. The area boasts beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for refreshing swims and snorkeling.
