The My Son sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dedicated to the worship of the god Shiva and built between the 4th and the 14th century AD by the kings of Champa. The site features many beautiful stone sculptures, temples and towers, surrounded by exotic tropical jungle. My Son was damaged during Vietnam’s tumultuous past and lay neglected for a long time. It was ‘rediscovered’ and renovated by the French in 1898, then used as a hiding place by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, when they mistakenly thought their American enemy would not bomb a holy site. Despite the destruction that ensued, the majority of the central complex managed to survive and parts have now been rebuilt.
