This was a subordinate residence of the Nanbu clan during the Edo period until 1896 (Meiji 29), when it became the official residence of the Arisugawa family. It was later opened to the public as a memorial park.
The garden dates back to the Edo period in 1650. The garden has its roots in the daimyo's mansion.
