After belonging to many empires over time (including Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and most recently Yugoslavian), Macedonia gained its independence in 1991. This influence from different eras and cultures has made its mark on the appearance of Skopje.
Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic centre. Тhe city has long been shared by Christians and Muslims.

The Memorial House is dedicated to the humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa. She lived in Skopje from 1910- 1928г.
A huge and quite simple structure with no dome but a normal pitched roof, the Sultan Murad Mosque dates from 1463 and is the oldest surviving mosque in the city.
The Church of the Holy Saviour in Skopje was built in the late 17th or early 18th century on the remains of the older temple burned in a fire in 1689
