The site where the cathedral stands today, in the center of the city of San Salvador, is the place where the colonial church of Santo Domingo stood in the 19th century, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1873. In 1956, Archbishop Luis Chávez y González undertook the reconstruction works, the first stone was laid on Friday, October 12. of the cathedral that lasted for four decades. During this time, the cathedral witnessed the numerous social conflicts that the country was experiencing. On August 6, 1975, the Popular Revolutionary Bloc (BPR) took over the temple in protest against government repression. It was the first of several shots of the cathedral that took place until 1980.
