You will also come across the imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty rulers and visit the Peterskirche featuring beautiful artworks.
Start your tour at the Votivkirche, a neo-Gothic church consecrated in the year 1879. It is built on the very site where an attempt to assassinate Emperor Franz Joseph was made. The emperor's brother took an active role in raising the funds to build the church as thanksgiving to God. The building is made out of white sandstone and one of its most impressive features is the main altar.
Next, you will see the townhall at Rathausplatz, designed by the architect Friedrich Schmidt. The construction of the building took place between 1872 and 1883. It features five towers and its facade is made in Gothic style. Its main tower is 98 meters tall. The building also houses the statue of Rathausmann, which is amongst one of the symbols of Vienna.
As you continue, you will come across the Rathaus park, located across the street from the city hall. The park was built on the instructions of the Emperor Franz Joseph. A military parade ground previously existed here. Dr. Rudolf Siebeck is known to have designed the park. Here you will find a variety of trees including a Japanese umbrella tree and an old Ginkgo Biloba tree.
