With privileged views over the Atlantic Coast, the valleys and the Serra de Sintra, the millennial Castle of the Mouros, of the Muslim Foundation, occupied a key strategic position in defending the local territory and the maritime accesses to the city of Lisbon. The Moors lived there until 1147, when Sintra was handed over to D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal following the conquests of Lisbon and Santarém. The guide will also do the historical contextualization about the Castle. Entrance not included
Sintra was, in the 19th century, one of the first cribs of Romantic architecture in Europe. Its own climate and the consequent nature attracted the eyes of those who sensitized to the landscape dared to retouch it with a stunning architecture in Edenic harmony propitious to the contemplation of the Beautiful and the Sublime. It is in this picturesque setting that we find, right at the exit from the historic center of Sintra, the Quinta da Regaleira. Designed and built in the course of the final eight centuries, it mirrors the sensitivity and cultural, philosophical and scientific interests of the property owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), allied with the virtuosism of Italian architect-cenographer Luigi Manini (1848-1936). From the culture and creativity of these two personalities, it resulted in an eclectic-revivalist architectural ensemble, with particular focus on the styles Manuelino, Renaissance. Medieval and Classical. The guide will also talk about the history of this palace. Entrance not included.
