Itinerary

San Martin Tilcajete

San Martín Tilcajete is one of the two towns in Oaxaca that are dedicated to carving in wood those beings so recognized for their great color: the Oaxacan alebrijes. San Martín Tilcajete is a small town dominated by one-story houses and green mountains in its surroundings. Wherever you walk, you will see signs of family workshops that are dedicated to making alebrijes. Learning how these figures are made and buying them is the main activity of the place.

This is a town full of customs and deep-rooted traditions, where mysticism, essence and warmth that shelters a town are contained, where its inhabitants transmit, teach and inherit generation after generation. Black clay from Coyotepec immediately comes to mind when mentioning Oaxacan pottery. It is one of the most famous pottery towns in Mexico. It is also the largest in Oaxaca, with some 700 homes actively producing.

Teotitlan del Valle

The town of Teotitlán del Valle (“place of the gods”, in Nahuatl), is famous thanks to the quality and beauty of its woolen textile products: rugs, jackets, bags, sarapes, tapestries, “corridors”, carpeting, curtains and dresses, made on large wooden looms and decorated with natural dyes, whose designs range from traditional Zapotec and Mixtec fretwork and taps to reproductions by contemporary painters.
