The place is a must see in Tangier, commonly known as Grand Socco, and it divides Tangier Medina from the Ville Nouvelle area of Tangier. As the word Socco/Zoco may suggest, the square used to be a market. Hectically, it hosted Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany when he was visiting Tangier on 3 March 1905. Consequently, the stopover worsened tension between the Germans and the French. Also, among other events, it ultimately led to World War I. Furthermore, the plaza is also the location where King Mohamed V delivered his independence speech and the symbol of his arrival to the city on April 9, 1947 when Tangier was under international control.
