The former is found in the Hida region in the Gifu Prefecture. Takayama may be considered a city, but it’s not the kind that people are accustomed to. You can go for a walk around the area and admire the architecture and its historical landmarks, like the Higashiyama Walk and the Takayama Jinya. Shirakawa-go, on the other hand, is known for the numerous gassho zukuri houses that are lined up all around it. These houses are over a hundred years old, and their design is said to look like the clasped hands of monks in prayer.
