Known as the 'Saxon Versailles', Großsedlitz is one of the pearls of Baroque architecture. With its meticulously designed gardens, magnificent palaces and historical significance, it offers visitors a glimpse of the grandeur of 18th century European aristocracy. The palace was built as a summer residence for Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Its lavish interiors include intricately decorated rooms, magnificent halls and sumptuous period furnishings. One of the highlights of Großsedlitz is the Nymphenbad, a stunning open-air pavilion in the gardens. This elegant building with a central pool surrounded by columns, statues and frescoes creates an atmosphere of classical beauty. There is also an impressive orangery and a series of historic greenhouses.
The history of Leipzig is interwoven with important events. The University of Leipzig was founded here in 1409 and the famous Battle of the Nations was fought near the city in 1813. The city played a key role in the fall of the Iron Curtain and the unification of Germany. See the historic sights and stroll through the Old Town. Admire the medieval architecture, including the historic Town Hall and the beautifully restored St Thomas Church. This church has more than 800 years of history and is famous for having Johann Sebastian Bach as its cantor from 1723 to 1750. The famous composer was originally buried in an unmarked grave in St John's Church in Leipzig. Around 1800 his remains were moved to the interior of the church, which was destroyed during the Second World War. It was not until 1950 that his coffin was finally placed on the altar of St Thomas. The Thomanerchor, a world-famous boys' choir, performs in St Thomas' Church.
