Pretoria, South Africa's administrative capital, was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, named after his father. It became the capital of the South African Republic (Transvaal) in 1860. The city was central to the Boer Wars, witnessing sieges and peace treaty signings. In 1910, upon the formation of the Union of South Africa, it was designated the administrative capital. It officially became a city in 1931. Pretoria remained a key governmental hub throughout the apartheid era and continues this role in democratic South Africa, now part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
