Villa dei Misteri
Step into the Villa of the Mysteries, a beautifully preserved suburban Roman villa from the 2nd century BC. Admire the famous 17‑m fresco in the dining hall depicting an initiation mystery cult of Dionysus. Originally a luxurious retreat and later a wine‑producing estate, it offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient ritual life and architecture.
The name comes from lupa, Latin for “she-wolf”, a slang term for prostitute. Inside, you’ll see small stone beds in private rooms and erotic frescoes above the doorways – likely used as a visual menu for clients. This was a busy, everyday part of life in ancient Pompeii, showing us how open Roman society was about sex and pleasure.
This stone Amphitheatre, built around 70 BC, is one of the earliest in the Roman world. It seated up to 20 000 spectators, with dramatic entryways for elites and a sunken arena floor for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.
