Originally built in the 18th century as a military fortress under Emperor Joseph II, Terezin is indelibly linked to World War II. The most famous part of Terezin, the Great Fortress, was a gathering place for Jews from all over Europe and was used by the Nazis for propaganda during a visit by the Red Cross in 1944. Meanwhile, the lesser-known Small Fortress was used as a brutal prison by the Nazi secret police, the Gestapo. For those interested in the history of World War II and the Holocaust, a visit to the museums in the Small and Great Fortresses of Terezin will provide insight into this tragic chapter in human history.
