Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan Scenic Area
The Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hunan Province, China, is renowned for its breathtaking quartzite sandstone pillars, lush forests, and deep ravines. Covering over 26,000 hectares, it features over 3,000 towering peaks, many exceeding 200 meters in height. The landscape, formed over millions of years of erosion, resembles a natural "stone forest." Key attractions include Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Valley, and Tianzi Mountain. The area inspired the floating mountains in the movie Avatar. The Bailong Elevator, or "Hundred Dragons Sky Lift," is an engineering marvel in Zhangjiajie, built vertically into a cliff face in the Wulingyuan area. As the world’s tallest outdoor elevator (326 meters high), it transports visitors from the valley floor to the summit in just 1 minute and 28 seconds, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding "Avatar" peaks. Opened in 2002, the glass-walled elevator consists of three cabins, each carrying up to 50 people. While controversial for its environmental impact, it significantly reduces hiking time to popular spots like Yuanjiajie and the "Hallelujah Mountain."
