This hike is a rare chance to do go beyond the beach and off the beaten path, experience nature and learn more of the history of Barbados and Barbadians! Learn the facts and interesting lore related to the enslaved peoples buried at the Newton burial grounds with our friendly and knowledgable guide.
We meet at the big carpark in Oistins, Christ Church. Because there aren't direct trails to the burial grounds we walk from Oistins up through a series of residential neighbourhoods with some interesting detours. The guides are fun and friendly and have lots of stories about Bajan people, Barbadian fruits and vegetation, and culture related to the sites and sounds of the island. When we arrive at the Newton plantation, the guides give an overview and provide historical background as we survey the informational monuments on the burial grounds. We will talk about the enslaved peoples of the Newton Plantation, their stories and their impact on the current cultural landscape of Barbados today. After that we head back to the Oistins carpark for an optional lunch/lime in the Oistins area.
