The Roman neighborhood known as “Trastevere” refers, literally, to the area “across the Tiber.” In ancient times, this was the district where Jews and freed slaves lived. Trastevere is one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of the city, rich in history, legends, and underground spaces. We will start our journey by discovering the hidden gems of Trastevere, including the oldest synagogue in Rome. Our visit will take us to several unusual churches, and will wind through the city’s ancient alleyways. We will then cross the river to the Tiber Island where, believe it or not, an order of monks maintain to this day, beneath their monastery, an ancient underground cemetery where we will see the preserved remains of many dozens of skeletons.

We will take you to visit the dungeons of ancient churches, where the first Christians gathered to pray and ancient underground cemeteries, which tell of a Rome that no longer exists today. You will be impressed to know a Rome that you did not think could exist, and that has its history since the 4th century BC
We will visit the heart of Rome, Trastevere. We will visit churches, ancient alleyways, and forgotten corners of the historic city. Then we will cross the Tiber on one of the oldest bridges in Rome to arrive at an underground cemetery maintained by the Brotherhood of the Sacconi Rossi on the Tiber Island.
