PLEASE NOTE: The underground area of the Basilica di San Crisogono is open Monday to Friday only from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (they are open all day on Saturday and Sunday). As a result, the undergrounds cannot be visited during the morning tours from Monday to Friday. However, the duration of the tour will remain unchanged, as your guide will point out other monuments instead
Without Cavallini Frescoes: With this option, you can not visit the Cavallini frescoes which are open to the public only in the morning.
Meet by the Tiber river and get ready to chart a fascinating course through the centuries as you walk the picturesque streets of Trastevere and visit hidden sights unlikely to be noticed on your own.
Discover the medieval Basilica of Saint Crisogono and be surprised by the captivating beauty behind its outside ordinary appearance. Marvel at the apse made by Bernini and the geometric Cosmatesque pavements. Go below the surface and find yourself in 4th-century Rome. Perceive the mystical atmosphere of the ancient underground basilica and walk along its walls, original frescoes, and the old crypt.
Then head towards the Church of Santa Cecilia and go under the earth into its impressive undergrounds. Walk on the original mosaic-flooring of the 3rd-century Roman House of the martyr and be amazed by the preserved look of the subterranean earlier basilica. Be fascinated by the legend of St. Cecilia’s life and her macabre death, and see the beautiful Roman mosaics all around her tomb. Visit the Cavallini room and marvel at his Last Judgement masterpiece (only with the morning option of the tour).
You will make your own way to the meeting points
- Please arrive at the meeting point 5 minutes before the activity starts - An appropriate dress-code is required in order to enter the churches: knees and shoulders should be covered - Some sections might not be accessible during bad weather conditions - Wear comfortable walking shoes, a moderate amount of walking is involved - For environmental reasons, it is preferable that you bring your own earphones and do not print your voucher. We will provide earphones in case you forget yours - We suggest you bring your own refillable bottle as you can find drinkable-water fountains everywhere in Rome - Be aware that the afternoon option of this tour does not include the Cavallini frescoes
