Salt’s history spans millions of years, with deposits formed from an ancient salt lake in Austria and Germany. By 4,000 BC, humans were using salt to preserve food. The Celts began mining it around 600 BC, and in the Middle Ages, Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops used it to fund the city’s architecture. Today, you can explore this incredible legacy at Salzwelten Salzburg — the world’s oldest accessible salt mine!
Salt: The "White Gold" of History Salt has shaped civilizations for millions of years. Around 250 million years ago, a massive salt lake covered what’s now Austria and Germany. As water evaporated, salt deposits formed and were pushed up into the Alps.
