Cut from a single square of Carrara marble this masterpiece was executed when Michelangelo was in his mid-20’s. It is 17 feet (5.17 metres) tall and represents the biblical figure of David who slayed the giant Goliath. In 1504 this statue came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence. In addition to David the Accademia houses several incomplete works by Michelangelo as well as other artworks by Botticelli, Paolo Uccello and Andrea del Sarto to name a few.
