Abu Simbel is situated 300 kilometers south of Aswan and just 20 kilometers north of the border with Sudan on the western bank of Nile. The twin temples of Abu Simbel temple are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. were originally carved out of the mountainside in 13th century BC during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II reigned (1279– 1213 BCE) Because of their remote location near the Sudanese border in southern Egypt, the temples were unknown until the rediscovery in 1813.
