The Messina Astronomical Clock, part of the city’s cathedral, was built by the Ungerer company in Strasbourg in 1933. It is integrated into the church tower (rebuilt at the beginning of the century after the earthquake), of which it is the most characteristic element. The mechanism moves every day at 12.00 and lasts 12 minutes.
Military Shrine and Belvedere.Built at the behest of Richard the Lionheart, King of England, in transit from Messina for the Third Crusade, the fortress was modernized to be part of the defense system wanted by Charles V in the sixteenth century. In the ancient tower that still exists was held prisoner, in 1284, Charles of Anjou called "the Lame", captured by Admiral Roger of Lauria, during a naval battle. Destroyed by the 1908 earthquake, the Military Shrine of Christ the King was built on the esplanade where the bodies of the fallen of the two World Wars are laid. On the top of the tower is placed the “bell” cast with the bronze of enemy cannons of the 1915-18 war which, with a height of 2.80 meters and a weight of 130 quintals, is the largest bell in Italy.
