Leave the noisy city streets behind and step inside the world of the Medici grand dukes. Learn how the Medici acquired this magnificent estate just outside the city centre across the Ponte Vecchio. Inside the Pitti Palace, visit the Palatine Gallery, home to an astounding collection of fine Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces. Then, visit the Boboli Gardens, the lavish grounds behind the palace. Walk among delightful gardens and admire the grottos, fountains, and sculptures that transformed this vast green landscape into an outdoor museum.
Palatine Gallery The tour begins inside the Pitti Palace, at the Palatine Gallery, where we will admire masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque art. This remarkable gallery includes the largest collection of works by Raphael, as well as works by Italian masters like Titian, Caravaggio, and the greatest woman artist of the past, Artemisia Gentileschi. Unlike most modern museums, this gallery is set in a sumptuous period setting. Walk through hall after hall to admire great masterpieces, and fine 17th-century furnishings including tables with semi-precious stone inlays, vases, and impressive stuccoed and frescoed ceilings.
Exit the palace and step into an exquisite outdoor museum. Here, Medici court artists and architects transformed simple orchards into the model Italian garden. Adorned with grottos, fountains, and ancient and Renaissance statues, the Boboli Gardens became an escape from the city for the grand dukes. Enjoy beautiful views over the city and an escape from the noisy crowded city streets.
