This tour is perfect for those who simply can’t get enough of Ancient Roman ruins. Ostia Antica was the port town to Ancient Rome, this was where materials were delivered from ships all over the Empire and where the rich would vacation. This tour gives you a chance to wander the abandoned streets with more liberty than most of the archaeological sites in Italy. This fascinating tour will begin with your guide collecting you in a private car and driving you a short distance from Rome to the incredible town of Ostia Antica. Often referred to as Rome’s Pompeii, Ostia Antica is without doubt one of the most overlooked treasures in the area. Once a thriving working port built in the seventh century BC, in the later Republic the town became a holiday destination filled with hotels, bars, and brothels. Exploring the empty streets of Ostia Antica gives you the sense that the ancient world is not really lost, but rather temporarily forgotten.
Group tour by train: This small group tour will meet with your guide and take the local train from Rome to Ostia Antica
Once we arrive at the site, we will enter through the main gates and find a small, picturesque Necropolis, a final resting place for the rich and famous Romans who lived there. From here we will continue down the main road encountering all aspects of Rome life including: the beautiful bath houses and their well preserved mosaics, a 3,000 seat theatre, luxury villas, everyday shops and markets, and even some public bathrooms. As you wind your way through the streets, you’ll really get a sense of how the ancient Romans really went about their day to day lives.
