Hutovo blato was declared as park of nature in 1995. Because its outstanding beauty and significance. Karst water from hills makes larger number of lakes, gorges and river Krupa and ensures a high level of groundwater, coming down hill in valleys. High level of underground water effects on appearance of constant and semi-constant springs and wells. Lakes of Hutovo blato represents crypto depressions, because the bottoms of some lakes are under the sea level ( Jelim 18m ). The biggest lakes on Hutovo blato are: Deransko, Jelim, Drijen, Orah, Škrka and Svitava. Svitava lake is artificial accumulation, made during the construction of hydropower Čapljina. All lakes of Hutovo blato are mutually conected with large number of canals and gorges.

Park of nature Hutovo Blato is a unique sub-Mediterranean wetlands in Europe on south of Herzegovina, in typical karst ambient, on a left bank of river Neretva. It is known since ages as green oasis, with water fullness and conditions for life of a large number of plant and animal species. Swamp is interesting and significant from ornithology, ichthyologic, scientific, environmental and tourist point of view. Hutovo blato is considered one of the greatest reservations during the winter for birds in Europe. It belongs to municipalities Capljina and Stolac, and it spreads on swamp, prairie and hill terrain, with sea level of 1 m to 432 m. This area is located 15 km from Adriatic sea from where comes influence of Mediterranean climate.
