The medina of Marrakech is a Moroccan medina, the historic heart of Marrakech. It forms one of the five districts that make up the urban municipality of Marrakech.
The Bahia Palace is a former 19th century palace of eight hectares in Moorish / Islamic style, in Marrakech in Morocco. Current museum, it is one of the masterpieces of Moroccan architecture and Moroccan art, one of the major monuments of the country's cultural heritage, and one of the main places of tourism in Morocco1,2. The architect Si Mohammed El Mekki (1857-1926), pupil of Captain Erckman, head of the French mission in Marrakech, is credited with most of the work.
A first mosque was built in 1148 by Sultan Almohade Abdelmoumen after conquering Marrakech. He will rebuild a second version of similar size around 1158. This is the current version, the first having been demolished. Abu Yusuf Ben Tachafin will finalize the construction of the minaret around 11953. The Koutoubia is considered an important example of Almohad architecture and the architecture of Moroccan mosques in general3. The 77-meter minaret is decorated with different geometric patterns and topped with a spire and metal orbs. It probably inspired other buildings such as the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat, which were built soon after at the same time4,5,6,7. The minaret is also considered an urban landmark and an important symbol of Marrakech.
