Magnificent limestone facade, adorned with intricate carvings and topped with a majestic dome
Betty's Hope, Antigua's first large-scale sugar plantation, was founded in 1650 by Governor Keynell and developed by the Codrington family from 1674. It became a model estate, known for its efficiency and innovative sugar production techniques. On your visit, you'll see restored windmills, the still house, water catchment systems, and the remains of the manager's house. The site includes an interpretation center with artifacts and exhibits detailing the plantation's history.
At Devil's Bridge in Antigua, you will see a dramatic natural limestone arch carved by the powerful Atlantic waves. This stunning geological formation is located on the eastern coast of the island, in the Indian Town National Park. The bridge offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the crashing waves below. Visitors can explore the surrounding area, which includes blowholes that shoot water into the air during high tide, creating a spectacular display. The site also has historical significance, as it is linked to local folklore and the tragic history of enslaved Africans who, according to legend, leaped from the bridge to escape the hardships of slavery. The natural beauty, combined with its cultural and historical context, makes Devil's Bridge a unique and poignant destination in Antigua.
