Muizz Street, also known as Al Moez Ldin Allah Al Fatimi Street, is a historic gem in Islamic Cairo, Egypt. This ancient street spans approximately one kilometer and boasts an unparalleled concentration of medieval architectural treasures, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site. Named after Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah, the fourth caliph of the Fatimid dynasty, this iconic street stretches from Bab Al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south. In 1997, the national government initiated extensive restoration efforts aimed at preserving the street's historical buildings, modernizing infrastructure, and enhancing its overall appeal, effectively transforming it into an "open-air museum." On April 24, 2008, Al-Muizz Street was reimagined as a pedestrian-only zone, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors to explore its rich heritage between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., with exceptions for cargo traffic outside these hours.
During your journey along this historic route, you'll encounter several significant stops: Bab al Futuh (Conquest Gate): This gate, completed in 1087, is one of the few remaining gates in the Old City walls of Cairo. It faces north and stands proudly at the northern end of Muizz Street. Built as part of the fortifications by Commander/Vizier Badr al-Jamali of Fatimid Imam/caliph Mustansir, its rounded towers were a formidable defense with features such as shafts for boiling oil or water, as well as arrow slits. The gate's intricate design features vegetal and geometric motifs.
Sultan Al-Ghuri Complex: Constructed between 1503 and 1505, this monumental complex includes a khanqah, mausoleum, sebil-kuttab, mosque, and madrasa. Spanning both sides of the al Mu'izz li-Din Allah Street, it offers a glimpse into the architectural grandeur of its time.
