Excursion to Alexandria

We will start touring the Alexandrian port to visit the Qaitibay Citadel. This defensive complex was built in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitibay, right in the same place where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria stood. Several earthquakes destroyed the watchtower, the remains of which served to build the Citadel.

Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

Next we will move to the south of the city, where we will access the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. The bas-reliefs of the site, one of the most outstanding in Alexandria, show the fusion between Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture. We will go into its three different levels to discover the passageways, tunnels and galleries along which the tombs of the necropolis are distributed. Very close to these catacombs we will find the Pompey Column, located in the place where the temple dedicated to the Greek-Egyptian god Serapis was located.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Afterwards we will enjoy lunch in the center of Alexandria. The menu will include fish and seafood rice. In the afternoon, we will approach one of the most relevant modern buildings in the city: the New Library of Alexandria. Created as a tribute to the ancient space that gathered thousands of papyri and parchments, this contemporary building reopened in 2002 constitutes one of the most important cultural spaces in the eastern Mediterranean. In the late afternoon we will finally return to the hotels in Cairo.
