Fortaleza San Felipe
Get ready to travel back in time to the heart of Dominican history. Located by the sea on a small hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, San Felipe Fortress is one of the most iconic landmarks in Puerto Plata and one of the few remaining colonial forts in the Caribbean. What will you see? Impressive 16th-century stone walls, built to defend the city from pirate attacks. Panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Puerto Plata boardwalk – a perfect spot for unforgettable photos. Old cannons, secret passages, and watchtowers still preserved in their original form.
Located in the heart of Puerto Plata’s historic district, Umbrella Street (Calle de las Sombrillas) is a vibrant pedestrian alleyway filled with charm and color. Suspended above the street are 178 brightly colored umbrellas, creating a beautiful canopy that draws visitors from all over the world. What will you see and do? Independence Park, also known as Central Park (Parque Central), is the beating heart of downtown Puerto Plata. This iconic public square is not only a favorite gathering place for locals and visitors, but also a living symbol of the city’s cultural identity and Dominican history. ️ What will you see and do? Victorian architecture: The park is surrounded by beautifully preserved Victorian-style buildings with wooden details and pastel colors, reflecting 19th-century European influence. Octagonal gazebo: In the center of the park stands a unique, two-level octagonal bandstand, built in Victorian style with touches of Moorish design. It's often used for live music and cultural events.
