The Queluz National Palace is an 18th century palace, a reference of rococo and neoclassical architecture in Portugal. Built in 1747 by the future D. Pedro III, husband of Queen D. Maria I, it was conceived as a summer residence, becoming a privileged leisure space for the royal family. It served as a discreet place of incarceration for Queen D. Maria I while her madness continued to worsen after D. Pedro's death in 1786. After the fire that struck the Ajuda Palace in 1794, the Palace of Queluz became official residence of the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future D. João VI, and his family. It remained that way until the royal family fled to Brazil in 1807 due to the French invasion of Portugal. Apparatus spaces and private rooms follow one another in connection with the gardens, an integral part of this playful experience.
Built on a rocky massif in the 9th century, the Moorish Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Serra de Sintra. The castle retains the charm of an ancient ruin, with a dense forest surrounding the ancient walls offering a privileged view of the whole. its rural surroundings extending to the Atlantic Ocean. Inside it stands the rain-fed cistern and the romantic chapel of St. Peter, whose interesting remains are still visible, such as the two curious Romanesque portals and various tombs of the ancient medieval necropolis.
Located in the heart of the village of Mafra is the only National Monument that includes a Royal Palace, a Basilica and a Convent. The building occupies an area of approximately four hectares (37,790 m2). Built in abundant lioz stone in the Mafra region it consists of 1200 divisions, over 4700 doors and windows, 156 staircases and 29 courtyards and halls. This is the case of the Library, which holds all the knowledge of a collection with more than 36 thousand volumes; of the bell set consisting of two chimes with a total of 98 bells; and of the six historic organs that echoed again in the Basilica in 2010.
