On this fascinating 2.5-hour tour, you’ll go 15 metres underground to discover the four layers of St. Clement’s Basilica, and visit an eerie crypt covered in Capuchin monks’ bones at the Crypt of the Capuchins. Our top-rated kid-friendly guide has arranged some fun multimedia tools, games and quizzes to accompany you along the way.
As you go further underground you’ll discover the 2000 year old ruins of an old temple dedicated to Mithra, a private Roman house and a storehouse dating back to the 1st century.
Make your way on foot to the church, Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, (Our Lady of the Conception) where you can see the Crypt of the Capuchins. Here the five rooms are decorated with monks’ bones, as more than 4000 friars were buried here. Some of them are completely intact. A plaque at the entrance of one of the chapels reads: “What you are now, we once were, what we are now, you will be.”
