Enjoy your beach vacation to the fullest at the Old Town of Denia, a seaport city of great historical importance inhabited by Iberian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Napoleonic, and Christian civilizations throughout its long history of 2000 years, by exploring multicultural gastronomy at the seafood paradise of Els Magazinos, admiring wonderful seascapes along the palm-lined Cervantes Esplanade, and delving into the turbulent history at Dénia’s spectacular monuments, including the 9th-century Denia walls defending the Taifa capital of a powerful Islamic kingdom, the Consell Tower where the Christian authorities staged their military tactics, and the Castell Tunnel – the moving testimony of the 20th-century Civil War in Spain.
The tour starts at the foot of the Walls Of Denia, surrounding the thriving urban center of an Islamic kingdom twelve centuries ago. The weathered ramparts reveal Dénia’s ancient heyday under Muslim rule when they were built to defend the mighty Alcazaba Fortress on top of a hill, the main headquarters of the kingdom.
Proceed to stroll through the seemingly endless maze of narrow cobbled alleys and lovely whitewashed peasant houses adorned with flowers in the center of the Old Town where you can discover delightful surprises even in unexpected corners. Among that stands out Consell Square, surrounded by the most important public centers, including the elegant stone Town Hall, the serene 18th-century main church in Baroque style, and the Dénia Tourist Office. Visitors can spot occasional colorful parades and traditional performances taking place on the rock terrace of the bright square.
Then, go uphill to Herrería Street, carved into the rock hill topped by the citadel, to check out “Bésame en este rincón”. Translated as “Kiss me in this corner”, the romantic corner is the most photographed site in the Old Town, where you can take special souvenir photos with breathtaking backdrops of the tranquil town below.
