Paestum is an ancient city of Magna Graecia located in Campania, famous for its extraordinary Doric temples, among the best preserved in the world. Founded by the Greek colonists around the 7th century B.C. under the name of Poseidonia, the city later became a Roman colony but kept many of its Greek characteristics.
Archaeological areaThe three main temples, dedicated to the deities of Olympus, represent an extraordinary example of Greek architecture: Temple of Hera (Basilica) - Built around 550 BC, it is the oldest of the three and dedicated to the goddess Hera, protector of marriage and family. Temple of Neptune - Dating back to 460 BC, it is the best preserved and is considered a masterpiece of the Doric style. Temple of Athena (or Ceres) - Built around 500 BC, it shows an interesting mix of Doric and Ionic elements.
