The first cemetery in the world to be preserved by UNESCO, Chefchaouen's medina houses the largest concentration of historic monuments in Morocco. Once a cemetery, Chefchaouen became a tourist destination. Once a destination, it became an artists' colony, and then an impoverished suburb of Tangier. Then the Moroccans moved in and transformed it into an oasis of Moroccan culture .
