Situated north of Avenida da Liberdade on top of the Pombal Marquis Square, stands the biggest park in Lisbon. Originally called Liberty Park, it was renamed in honor of the King of England's visit in 1903. It would, henceforth, be called Edward VII Park. Developed along 25 acres of land, these two avenues are paralleled by a long grass strip, with many delights and relaxing views
Although hiding some mysteries, it was considered the most beautiful place in Lisbon at the turn of the century, the impressive structure rises above the Alcântara valley. The construction of an aqueduct to bring water to the city gave King João V the opportunity to indulge his passion for grandiose construction, as the only area of Lisbon that had water was in Alfama.
Commissioned by King Manuel I, the tower was built from 1515 to 1521 to be a fortress in the middle of the Tagus. The starting point for the Discoveries' navigators, this Manueline jewel became the symbol of Portuguese expansion.
