Our tour offers a memorable day in one of Bavaria’s most scenic and unspoiled areas. For over five centuries, this stunning monastery has been home to Benedictine monks, continuing the traditions of hospitality and beer brewing that you can enjoy today.
On the scenic train journey from Munich through the Bavarian countryside, your guide will share the monastery’s rich history, from its origins as a castle for the Counts of Andechs From its origins as a castle for the Counts of Andechs—whose tale of rise, betrayal, and downfall will captivate you— to its transformation into a Benedictine institution that has thrived for centuries. You will also learn about the monastic tradition and the daily life of a monk.
Afterward you can hike a medieval pilgrimage route with wonderful views of the countryside, or take a bus if preferred and at the monastery, explore the stunning Baroque church, then relax in the beer hall or beer garden with traditional homemade beer and locally sourced food.
Your guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel before you embark together on a train that passes though the beautiful Bavarian countryside. On your way to the famous lake Ammersee you will learn about the history of the monastery and the House of Andechs. Once there you have a choice of either enjoying a forty minute hike on an old pilgrims route to the top of the Holy Mountain itself where you can see the wonderful baroque church of the monastery, admire the views from the balcony and enjoy a refreshing beer and tuck into the locally sourced specialties. Alternatively, you can do all of the above but if you want to make it a lazier day we can just take the bus to the top of the hill!
You will make your own way to the meeting points
