After a 3 hour drive it says Welcome to beautiful HALLSTATT! We take a walk through the beautiful old town, admire centuries-old buildings and breathe in the clear mountain air. The village in the Inner Salzkammergut, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a habitat that arose geologically from the primordial seas and has grown culturally from over 7.000 years of salt history. Picturesque houses embedded in the mountains, small dreamy and winding alleys and streets and the wonderfully clear lake at the foot of the city have created a true-to-original image of the idyllic small town in China. The historic town center with its market square and many small, colorful shops and cafés is particularly beautiful. Known for its historical past, you can learn a lot about the World Cultural Heritage Hallstatt, for example optional in the Hallstatt History Museum, which is definitely worth a visit in addition to the excavations and the old ossuary. A boat trip on the lake is also possible.
Of course, the oldest salt mine in the world, the Salzwelten in Hallstatt, should not be missing. Salt has been mined on the Salzberg for 7000 years at around 900 meters above sea level. The place is based on salt mining. During your tour you will experience how salt has been mined here for thousands of years and learn interesting facts about salt extraction then and now. The mine slides and the artificially lit, subterranean salt lake are exciting. You can climb the 350 meters in altitude comfortably with the cable car. Each participant of the tour gets a “mining outfit”. With our guide we hike into the tunnel and after a few minutes we reach the first highlight, like miners we can slide into the tunnel system! If you don't want to slide, you can use the stairs next to it. Next we reach one of the many “knowledge stations” with explanations and light shows. At the end of the tour, a miners' train brings us back to daylight, enriched by many experiences.
The Skywalk Hallstatt towers imposingly over Lake Hallstatt. It is one of the most impressive viewing platforms that Austria has to offer. It is located directly at the Rudolfsturm, at the entrance to the Hallstatt high valley. The Skywalk in the Salzkammergut was inaugurated in 2013 and has been one of the most visited destinations in the region ever since. The 12 meter long viewing platform floats freely above Lake Hallstatt. From the top you can look down on the historic center of Hallstatt - with the world-famous church. Nowhere else do you have this view of historic Hallstatt and the lake. The mountain drops 350 meters from the Skywalk viewing platform. You are 860 meters above sea level! You can reach the Skywalk with the Salzbergbahn and can therefore combine it with a visit to the salt mines at no extra cost.
