Dating back to 1808, the cemetery is renowned for Æreslunden, Norway's principal honorary burial ground. Æreslunden is the final resting place of numerous prominent Norwegians, including Edvard Munch, Henrik Ibsen, Henrik Wergeland, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Richard Nordrak, Christian Krogh, and Alf Prøysen.
