This full day tour takes you to the breathtaking Turda salt mine, a one of a kind attraction in Romania. Afterwards, we visit the charming village of Rimetea and hike to the Colțesti fortress, with its impressive scenery.
Turda was once the most important economic centre in this region. Salt, also known as ‘white gold’, has been extracted from the Turda salt mine since the Roman Age. This mine, dating from the 17th century, was a decisive factor in the development of this town from Roman times until today and is now a veritable history museum of salt mining.
We spend the afternoon in the Transylvanian Western Carpathian mountains in the village of Rimetea. The chalk white houses and the harmonious structure of the village have earned it several distinctions; for instance, it was named ‘The most beautiful village in Transylvania’ and received the ‘Europa Nostra Peris’ award.
We hike around 1 hour to the ruins of the Colțesti fortress, giving us an impressive view of the valley bellow.
