The caves have been a sacred element for all the Mayan civilizations since thousands of years ago. Mayans believe that the caves are sacred as they function as a connection from the world of the living to the underworld where some Gods live. Even nowadays, it is common to find people celebrating Mayan ceremonies to the Gods and asking for favors, blessings, or just praying. If you get the chance to see one, you will witness an event with such deep and important meaning.
Then, El Chechenal Beach will surprise you with its immense beauty, nature, and relaxation feeling.

This day will be full of adventure and nature, so get ready, pick up your backpack and let´s begin with a fun day! The day will start with us picking you up at the lobby of your hotel on the Island of Flores. Sit back and enjoy the 30-min ride to get to the community of La Cobanerita.
Once we get to the community of La Cobanerita, we will walk 400 meters to the first cave called "Cueva de las Pinturas" in Spanish and the Cave of the paintings in English. It is called that way because almost as soon as you get in, you will see a few cave paintings in red, black, and yellow dated centuries ago. The caves are considered the entrance to the underworld for the native Mayan communities, and they are still sacred nowadays.
OWL CAVE: Then, we will move forward to the next cave. There is a set of 6 caves in this place, and they all are called "Cuevas de la Cobanerita". The name of each of them is Cueva de las Pinturas, Cueva del Tecolote, Cueva del Mono, & Cuevas del Sapo; in English Cave of the paintings, the owl cave, the monkey cave, and the toad cave. Each of those caves receive its name from something inside them. For example, ancient Mayan paintings, owls leaving inside, a monkey figure made of rocks, and a toad figure. Some parts of the caves are narrow, so we suggest not to bring a big backpack, and to wear jeans or something comfortable that are not shorts, in case you need to bend over, you don´t scrape. We will visit 2 caves this time: The paintings cave and the owl cave and then we are going to visit a viewpoint 100 meters above the level of the Petén Itza Lake. Prepare your camera and enjoy every minute of it!
