The catacombs of Kom al-Shuqafa date back to Egypt's Roman times (30 BC - 395 AD) and were discovered in 1900. There are richly decorated sarcophagi and Medusa heads and at the front of the main burial chamber is a temple-like façade consisting of two columns supporting an architrave with a relief of a central winged solar disk flanked by Horus falcons.
Pompey's Pillar (Diocletian's Column - late 290 AD), stands right next to the remains of the Serapeum, the main temple of Serapis, the national god of ancient Egypt during this period. The monument stands some 26.85 m (88.1 ft) high, including its base and capital, and originally would have supported a statue some 7 m (23 ft.) tall.
