Lagoa Das Patas
The Lagoa das Patas [Duck Lake] Forest Reserve is in the interior of Terceira Island and gets its name from a beautiful artificial lake, fed by the water flowing from the Serra de Santa Bárbara range. The lake is surrounded by azaleas, hydrangeas and other bushes and trees. A recreational park was created from a small wood of Japanese red cedar, so that visitors can enjoy the spot in comfort.
It is a very extensive geological formation, resulting from the formation of a lava tube in the interior of the island, comprised in the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Mistérios Negros Natural Forest Reserve. It has ramifications in the form of different tunnels, formed by lava flows in different directions. One of its curiosities is the fact that it is located largely under a lagoon, Lagoa do Negro.
Furnas do Enxofre
They are constituted in a fumarolic field, in other words, in an area that comprises several outlets of aggressive volcanic gases, at different temperatures, some quite high (about 95º C on the surface and about 130º C at half a meter in depth). Such degassings are essentially composed of carbon dioxide (c. 95%), hydrogen sulphide (c. 3%), sulfurous gas, hydrogen, nitrogen, methane and others, in very low proportions.
