This large lush area of land surrounded by mountains is situated in the Overberg region of South Africa. This land lies about 70 km south - east of Cape Town just beyond the Hottentots Holland Mountains. This region is one of the more intensively farmed districts of South Africa which produces 60% of the national apple crop.Lately it has been known to produce cool wines because of its notable and successful increase in the wines. This is simply because of its coolest climate compared to any region in the country. Consequently Elgin wines and tourism have become significant parts of the valley's economy.
Situated in the Western Cape Province about 100 km from Cape Town this small town is part of the Overberg region. It is situated next to the mineral-rich hot springs but is a primarily an agricultural region. Most agricultural activities involve grain production and stock farming. It is popularly known for the Caledon Spa and Casino and the rolling hills and yellow canola fields during spring time.
